Breaking The Paddle: Ending School Corporal Punishment
Corporal punishment, the infliction of physical pain as a form of discipline in schools, has been a contentious issue for decades. Despite overwhelming evidence of its harmful effects, corporal punishment persists in many parts of the world, including the United States. "Breaking The Paddle" is a comprehensive analysis of the myriad ways in which corporal punishment harms children and the urgent need for its abolition.
The Harmful Effects of Corporal Punishment
Physical Injuries: Corporal punishment can cause a range of physical injuries, from minor cuts and bruises to broken bones and internal bleeding. In some cases, corporal punishment has even resulted in death.

Psychological Harm: Corporal punishment has also been shown to have severe psychological consequences, including increased aggression, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disFree Download (PTSD). Children who are subjected to corporal punishment are more likely to experience academic difficulties, social problems, and engage in risky behaviors.
Ineffectiveness: Despite the widespread use of corporal punishment, there is no evidence that it is an effective deterrent to misbehavior. In fact, research shows that corporal punishment is more likely to worsen behavior problems than to improve them.
Corporal Punishment and Human Rights
Corporal punishment is a violation of human rights. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) explicitly prohibits corporal punishment in all settings, including schools. The CRC has been ratified by 196 countries, making it one of the most widely accepted human rights treaties in the world.
The United States is one of the few countries that has not ratified the CRC. As a result, corporal punishment is still legal in many states, although its use is declining.
The Movement to End Corporal Punishment
The movement to end corporal punishment in schools has been gaining momentum in recent years. In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement calling for an end to corporal punishment in all settings. The AAP cited the overwhelming evidence of corporal punishment's harmful effects and its ineffectiveness as a deterrent to misbehavior.
In 2018, the United States Department of Education issued a guidance document discouraging the use of corporal punishment in schools. The guidance document noted that corporal punishment is ineffective, harmful, and a violation of students' rights.
Thanks to the efforts of dedicated advocates, corporal punishment is now banned in schools in 31 states and the District of Columbia. However, there is still more work to be done to ensure that all children in the United States are protected from this harmful practice.
Corporal punishment is a harmful and ineffective form of discipline that has no place in schools. It is a violation of human rights and has no place in a just and equitable society. It is time to break the paddle and end school corporal punishment once and for all.
