When I was a young girl, I was taught that the criminal justice system was fair and just. I believed that if someone was accused of a crime, they would receive a fair trial and that the guilty would be punished while the innocent would go free. However, as I grew older and learned more about the system, I realized that this was not always the case.
I have witnessed firsthand the injustices that can occur within the criminal justice system. I have seen innocent people wrongfully convicted of crimes, and I have seen guilty people go free. I have seen people of color treated differently than white people, and I have seen the poor treated differently than the rich. These injustices are not isolated incidents; they are systemic problems that have been embedded in our system for centuries.
In her new book, When Justice Dies, Sh Sarab takes an unflinching look at the failures of our criminal justice system. She provides a detailed account of the injustices she has witnessed firsthand, and she argues that we need to make fundamental changes to ensure that everyone is treated fairly.
Sarab begins her book by telling the story of a young man named Kalief Browder. Browder was arrested at the age of 16 for allegedly stealing a backpack. He was held on Rikers Island for three years without ever being convicted of a crime. During his time on Rikers, Browder was beaten, sexually assaulted, and placed in solitary confinement for months at a time. He was eventually released in 2013, but the trauma he experienced on Rikers haunted him for the rest of his life. Browder committed suicide in 2015.
Browder's story is just one of many examples of the injustices that occur within our criminal justice system. Sarab also tells the stories of other innocent people who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes, including Amanda Knox and the Central Park Five. She also discusses the systemic racism that exists within the system, and she argues that we need to do more to address this issue.
When Justice Dies is a powerful and provocative book that will challenge your assumptions about our criminal justice system. Sarab's writing is clear and concise, and she provides a wealth of evidence to support her arguments. This book is essential reading for anyone who is interested in social justice or who wants to learn more about the problems with our criminal justice system.
